Some customization questions

I have a requirement to show a map of the USA, with 48 out of 50 states as they are. and only 2 states are exceptions.

 

 

 

We have a concept of regions I am trying to replicate by shading states into different groups of colors.

 

 

 

However I have to split 2 states in half, is there anyway to color 1 state 2 different colors? Use a gradient style going

 

from 1 color to another? Or use a little custom image as a background in the shape of a state that I could color in another

 

program?
